Police Catch Man Removing Freon From AC Systems
Johnson City Press reports that residents saw a man removing air conditioning coolant from AC units at a number of apartment buildings. Witnesses contacted the police, and they responded to the scene. Police arrested 29-year-old John G. Love III and charged him with theft of an amount greater than $1,000. The arrest follows reports of AC unit tampering at several apartments in the region.
Love III later confessed to the crime. He is currently in a county jail on a $10,000 bond, awaiting a later court appearance. Experts suggest that the crime is a serious one and may be punishable as a federal crime due to the nature of the product he stole.
Recalled Air Conditioner Starts Fire
NBC Philadelphia reports that a recalled air conditioner is behind a fire at a local YMCA building. Police say a fire broke out in the childcare facility of the YMCA in the early hours of the morning. Emergency workers contained the fire before it could cause any injuries to the occupants. The fire did result in property damage to the building, which is visible from the outside. However, most of the damage is in the internal sections.
Officials claim the fire started because of a faulty AC unit that is on a national recall list. There are allegedly thousands of these units installed across the country, and they are particularly common in businesses and apartment blocks. Staff inside the building claim they had no idea the units were on the recall list, and they disconnected all similar units pending a full investigation into the incident.
