Air Conditioning Accidents Highlight the Importance of Proper AC Installation

Women Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Air Conditioner
An article in the Daily Mail details how a woman was struck on the head by a falling air conditioning unit. The unit fell on her while she was standing at a bus stop on a busy street. The large AC unit did not hit anyone else and miraculously caused no other damage.
The woman was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries to her head, arm and leg. The injuries were not life threatening; however, she remained in the hospital in what officials described as a serious condition.
Eye witnesses described seeing the large unit falling from the building above the bus stop, and they alerted emergency services. The matter was also reported to the local health and safety department for a full investigation into the matter.
In another case, a 28-year-old school teacher was struck by a falling air conditioner while she was walking on the sidewalk. According to an article from NBC, she suffered serious injuries. Part of her leg was split open. She also cut her elbow and bruised her arm. The woman was walking with her boyfriend when she suddenly felt something hit her on the head.
She fell to the ground and saw that she was bleeding profusely from her injuries. The unit had fallen from the sixth floor of an apartment block, and the man who was residing in the apartment rushed to assist her. The man claimed that he had seen the unit start to fall but was unable to stop it. The woman was transported to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She was treated for her injuries and received stitches in her leg and elbow.
According to an official from the Department of Buildings, property owners must ensure that AC units installed on buildings six stories or higher must be supported by an appropriate bracket. Proper air conditioner installation is essential. This will ensure that the unit operates at maximum efficiency, and without the correct installation, there is a real risk of injury or death.
