3 Interesting News Stories About Air Conditioning
How often do you think about your air conditioner? If you live in Las Vegas right now, it’s probably on your mind quite frequently. Air conditioning is all that stands between you and 113-degree weather, so saying a cool, comfortable home is important is a gross understatement.
An efficient AC system is so vital to people in desert states that it’s even worth stealing. 6 News reports that police are looking for two men who are accused of doing just that. Authorities say the two suspects entered a business late at night and loaded the AC unit into an SUV before taking off. The company owner caught the suspects on camera, but police haven’t made any arrests.
Strangely, this isn’t an uncommon occurrence in the United States. As you may imagine, thieves aren’t always stealing these units to keep their homes cool; instead, they are looking for the copper coils that are commonly found inside industrial units.
Inmates Sue for an Air Conditioner
Prison lawsuits are common and usually concern mistreatment by guards and other personnel. CNN News reports that a group of inmates recently filed a lawsuit, but they aren’t looking for money or reform; they’re hoping to get a better AC system. According to the lawsuit, the prison administration let the facility get so hot that the metal tables indoors were causing burns to inmates.
These conditions are particularly dangerous for older inmates and those who have serious medical conditions that make them susceptible to heat-related illnesses. The plaintiffs are asserting they have trouble breathing, and they’ve found an unusual ally.
The prison guards are also lobbying for AC systems through their union. In this particular facility, guards spend most of their days in rooms that are not air conditioned. Prisoners aren’t the only people who need relief from Las Vegas heat waves.

Are Air Conditioners Making Cities Hotter?
Researchers are looking into data that might suggest high air-conditioner use during the summer could be causing nighttime temperatures to rise by as much as 2 degrees. Thinkprogress.org reports that the heat discharged by air-conditioning units in larger cities may be to blame.
However, there are many factors that could also play a role, including building activity, heavy traffic and bright lights. Furthermore, when a dense population of people inhabits a small area, temperatures just outside of town can rise by nearly 10 degrees.
